Movie Weekend - No Spoilers
So. I haven't done my towering pile of laundry nor removed the air conditioners from the kitchen and Mum's room nor cleaned my room. Same ol', same ol', eh.

And, feeling guilty about the above, and because it's been ages since I've been out with the mater on the weekends, I took her to the movies. We saw The Bourne Ultimatum, The Simpsons Movie (Mum wanted to see it), and Sicko (Mum wanted to see it.) Next up, time permitting, are Stardust, Becoming Jane, Mr Bean's Holiday, 3:10 to Yuma, The Golden Compass. Possibly Sleuth.

Brief comments:

The Bourne Ultimatum - I read the trilogy over 20 years ago and really enjoyed them. The movie bears but a superficial resemblance to the books, but it's great fun nonetheless. WARNING: If you're prone to vertigo or motion sickness, take a meclizine (Dramamine, Antivert) before you go. Mum was violently ill through the second half of the film from all the camera-shaking and fuzzy flashback scenes. The girl next to her had to leave the movie as well.

The Simpsons Movie - Mum enjoyed it, as did 2 coworkers. I thought it had its funny moments but was sadly disappointed there was no plot resolution. Yes, it's a cartoon, but still!

Sicko - A sad movie. Much of what is depicted about the current US healthcare system is true, including the tales of patient dumping, but not all. In addition, the conclusion that universal healthcare would be the cure for the US is too simplistic. The UK, France, Canada, and Latin America healthcare systems also require reform, albeit to a different degree than in the US. There are many factors involved with the major healthcare issues in the US, and the populace itself also has to bear some of the responsibility for the problems.

Addendum to Sicko: Read the 12 Aug 2007 NY Times editorial on this topic: World’s Best Medical Care?
