Rolling Around and Around...
Talk about insanity, I can't get Justin Timberlake's song Love Stoned out of my head, and it's been well over a week.

The topsy-turvy weather pattern (heat waves, thunderstorms/torrential downpours) keeps affecting the power supply in my neck of the woods, not to mention I'm constantly in fear that my laptop's battery will explode one of these days. It always seems to overheat no matter how little or often I use the computer. In addition, I keep getting fatal errors on both the laptop and the office desktop.

My niece and nephew's birthdays are close together and I am a poor aunt, indeed. Their gifts seldom arrive on time, which isn't so bad for the little one, who isn't quite aware of the calendar yet, but for the older one, not so great. Still, the reason I bring them up is because I've been thinking more and more over the years that it's a very, very difficult time for both parents and children. All the turmoil, chaos, and uncertainty in this world doesn't exactly make one confident of the future, does it?

I'm confident of the future - confident it is really going to suck!!

I started reading "The Golden Compass" you mentioned. The book is pretty good so far... Hopefully it will fill my need for reading about a youngster that finds he/she is a wizard!! I had read "Darkness Rising", that was really good.

Right you are, PK. Makes one wonder whether there is a future.

I enjoyed the His Dark Materials many years ago and had recommended it to everyone I could think of (who actually reads), including the then fiance (now hubby) of a friend of mine. I even got him a set of the books... and only realized afterward that maybe I oughtn't have done so, since the books are anti-religion and he's from a devout Catholic family! Um, oops! lol.

Glad you're enjoying The Golden Compass so far. The Subtle Knife is very, very good, but the last book A Shadow in the North is really bittersweet.

Well, according to the Pope Catholicism is the only true religion, so he's got a right to be picky... Of course I'm not sure how the pope's time in the Hitler youth fits in with that view...

    What're you reading now???

Well, PK, a big chunk of the world believes Catholicism is the only religion, and another large chunk of the world believes Islamism is the only religion.

I've found that people tend to conveniently fit religion into what they want and need, so your comment about how the Pope served in Hitler's youth is pretty much on target. When you consider how many people of all religions have killed in the name of their religion or committed atrocities... well.

What am I reading now. Several books concurrently, actually. Some I doubt you'd be interested in as they're books that I'm editing or in the same genre of erotic romances.

However, I think you might enjoy Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series (I've just finished Book 6: Thin Air), as well as Laura Anne Gilman's Retriever series (I'm in the middle of Book 4: Burning Bridges).

There's an element of romance in these urbanish fantasies, but they don't play a huge role. The majority of the stories are action-oriented. Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series is also very good.

If you've not read of these series, I suggest you borrow from your local library and give them a try, then let me know what you thought, even if you don't like them. :0)
