I Am a Stick in the Mud
I did a bit of stern lecturing at someone else's blog. The Company Bitch's blog, to be exact.

This is a blog which I enjoy reading because it is extremely well-written. However, as with all blogs, sometimes those that post comments aren't very kind, either to the blogger or other commenters. And that's their right.

Let me make clear that there was nothing nasty or anything like that. Merely unkind.

The basic situation is that The Company Bitch, or CB as she calls herself, does not post comments herself, and on rare occasions, she will address things mentioned in comments as part of her posts.

Recently, CB was nice enough to clarify some things that some commenters were confused about or misinterpreted. The result was that many of her regular commenters derided those commenters who had needed the explanations in the first place and implored CB to not bother making any explanations as those who didn't "get" her posts or whatnot were clearly unworthy of her and to be ignored.

I'll let my response speak for itself:

Please forgive me for going off topic for a moment. The following is not meant as an attack but an observation:

This is your blog, which many people obviously enjoy, myself included. Whether you address us or not is your business; we'll read your blog regardless.

However, several of your other commenters have on previous posts, as well as the current one, derided other commenters whom they feel are unintelligent, either because the latter misinterpreted something you wrote or because they needed clarification about something else. All of which is their prerogative, of course.

I would respectfully remind people that 1/ not everyone who reads this blog has English as their native language and 2/ this medium, the written language vs the spoken one, is constantly open to misinterpretation because one is unable to see/hear gestures, expressions, intonation, etc. Therefore, it is only natural that sometimes people will be confused. Whether an explanation or clarification is provided is up to CB, of course, but I don't think it's fair to assume people are simply stupid if they don't "get" something.

I'm curious as to what reaction, if any, there is. Will these same people turn on me and tell me to "lighten up." Will they merely ignore me?

In any case, I just thought it was something that should be said, unearth-shattering though it is.
