| The Dust up That Wasn't |
My boss is out of the office and shall be gone most of next week.
Yes, that horrible sound you hear is me screaming. 'Banshee' is my other middle name.
In the meantime, a coworker was out sick, another left early (as agreed upon) and a third had the day off. I cannot tell you how pleased I am it's Saturday... now if I could just make it early Saturday again.
At any rate, after a long and sorry day at work, Mum dropped by the office and we decided to try one of our favourite restaurants, a mere 10-minute walk away, despite the fact it was already mid-evening. To our surprise, though the restaurant was packed as expected, the wait was only a mere quarter hour before we were seated; not only that, we got our order in quickly (Mum and I are no-nonsense with our shopping, whether for food or other items. It's all 1-2-3, done! Unless it's books. All bets are off then!).
That was when a long day became even longer. Almost an entire hour longer. In fact, 2 sets of customers that were seated after us had dined and left before we'd been served our meals, which consisted of a small steak for Mum, a salad and chicken wings for yours truly.
We could have kicked up a fuss I suppose. The Powers That Be only know we've witnessed such things only too often and, for that matter , been on the other end of it (I waited tables on weekends and summers for a few years a while back, and my mum used to be a cashier in a restaurant). The thing is, we could see how busy the place was and how shorthanded, too.
When I finally inquired about our meal (about 45 minutes later), the server (a doppelganger for a young Paula Abdul, down to the dark hair and petite body) seemed to believe only a short period had passed and that our meal would be out momentarily... when she went to check, it turned out our order had been mislaid. Ouch!
Well, she was quite apologetic, even more so after I threatened to douse her with my iced tea, and the owner also came by (we didn't request him) and apologised.
No, no, we didn't want any extra entrees or appetisers, thank you. Yes, we understand perfectly; these things do happen.
The owner took care of our order himself and our meals were out in short order. They were perfectly done, even more so when you considered it was now heading toward late evening (no, this is not a snide comment, merely fact. It was night.) and we were famished.
Sadly, we couldn't finish all our meal, but fortunately I still had my lunch container, so we packed the remainder away. :-) The owner even tossed in chocolate dessert! Again, not at our request.
Mum and I stumbled out, bellies full and well satisfied, over 2 hours after we'd stepped in. We napped on the train home and finally landed in the comfort of our beds.
I fell asleep with the light on.
The End. |
