Paranoia and Ponderings
Okay, call me paranoid... or call me paranoid.

Much as I have been enjoying the small cross-section of peoples' lives I am coming across, I am also rather disturbed at the remarkable amount of identifying information people display on their blogs.

Family, friends', coworkers' photos, including helpful captions, full names, birthdates (including years), locations, etc... things you wouldn't tell a stranger are there in cyberspace for all the world (or as much as the world that has access to the Internet) to see, analyze, track down, use and/or manipulate at will.

I know this is a cynical view and I freely admit it's not a charitable thought, but unless one is impervious to local and world events, I believe this is also realistic. It can't be a surprise to anyone that there are many, many unscrupulous people who will and do take advantage of the information others so innocently and joyfully post.

What I'm saying is... please be careful of the personal data and images you display. Male, female, young and old -- all of you.

Be safe.

Very true. I can't believe how careless people and salespeople are with receipts and taking down personal information.

At work the other day, someone had faxed a copy of a social security card, including their name and address, and left the confirmation copy in the machine. Luckily, I saw the sheet. Didn't recognise the name but it had a to/from name on it so at least I knew I could call and take care of it.

I first checked with my boss to see if either of the names were familiar, but they weren't.

Because you're keeping me up, dear SI!

Oh, wait. I'm supposed to be awake; I'm at work, silly! ;-D
