I think it may just be a result of a generally more unfriendly, intolerant world. I grew up in Greece and queues there are a fracas of raw nerves and often, arguments. This from a generally laid back nation. Here, people prefer to keep a stiff upper lip, then go home and bang their heads against the wall. I use the self checkouts, as I am an anti-social git who prefers not to talk to other people. They also do wonders for my self restraint.
