| "Pride and Prejudice" and "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" |
Saw the most recent movie adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and recalled just why it is that this book by Jane Austen is amongst my favorites. The dialogue, the setting, the characters, the interactions... *blissful sigh* :-D I've read the book over a half dozen times.
I very much enjoyed this screen version starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfayden, although I confess Mr Macfayden did not grab me as passionately as Jeremy Northam did in the role of Mr Knightley (in another Jane Austen movie adaptation of Emma). Oh, Mr Northam was simply delicious! lol. I think Mr Macfayden did have the right gravitas for Mr Darcy and he was great... just not as wonderful as Mr Northam. ;-)
Keira Knightley was also splendid (and glowing!), Jane was perfect, and the 2 flighty sisters, Kitty and Lydia, were just right. The best, however, had to be Mrs Bennet played by Brenda Blethyn.
Oh, yes! YES, YES ,YES! Let us not forgot another classic --
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe is very good. Very good indeed. I heartily endorse it. :-D
Disney and Walden Media are sure to be ecstatic at The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I believe this film will exceed their expectations as it was very well done and a very broad audience will enjoy it. For those who feared or desired the film to have an overt religious message, it does not.
The movie did a wonderful job of tying together the themes of family, war, betrayal, loyalty, and commitment, and the kids were marvelous as well, although I thought both younger children were simply fantastic (the characters of Lucy [Georgie Henley] and Edmund [Skandar Keynes]).
The elder sister, Susan (Anna Popplewell), turned out to be almost a carbon copy, face-wise, of one of my coworkers, lol. Anna Popplewell is much younger, slimmer, and she's British, of course, but the face is identical in every other way. it was a bit of a shock, really. :0)
Among the adults, the Snow Queen was played by an excellent Tilda Swinton. Her manipulation of Edmund and her cold demeanor and actions were perfectly chilling. :-O
For those of you with young children (<10 years), I would suggest you watch this film first and see if it is suitable. Although no blood and gore, there are themes that might be frightening to your young ones.
Please definitely go out and watch these in the theaters or rent the movies, if you must. Both films are great. |
